Daily 3-Bet: Duke Decisions, Fridge of Bananas, Won’t Back Dwan

You can always make suggestions for future 3-Bet pieces in the comments section below.

In today’s Daily 3-Bet we’ll take a look at Annie Duke teaching us how to make decisions, the bizarre behaviour of high rollers and a very memorable Tom Dwan song.

1) Make Decisions Like Annie Duke

Since leaving the poker world Annie Duke has transitioned into a public speaking career.

Howard Lederer
Good decisions all around.

Many of her seminars involve good decision-making, which can be a bit tough to stomach for anyone who was involved in the Epic Poker League collapse.

Duke recently spoke at the 2015 EnergySMART conference in a presentation called “How to Make Decisions Like a World Championship Poker Player”.

You can watch the presentation here if you sign up for the site.

It’s actually not a bad talk and Duke goes into detail about why people don’t learn from playing poker despite the game’s built-in super-fast feedback loop (you know if you made the right decision within seconds).

We’re still waiting for an in-depth analysis of what went wrong at Epic Poker though. We want to see that conference. Duke’s brother Howard Lederer could co-headline the seminar with his thoughts on Full Tilt Poker.

2) High Roller Requests Range from Bizarre to Obscene

Bananas all around!

This week the Associated Press got hold of a transcript from a recent hearing where former Mohegan Sun pitboss Maria DeGiacomo was fired for allegedly colluding with a high roller by allowing late bets in blackjack.

DeGiacomo’s defence is that hotel staff are frequently encouraged to treat super high rollers differently to keep them coming back and late bets are well within that treatment.

Interestingly Glen Costales, a pit manager at Mohegan Sun, spoke at the hearing and listed some of the ways the rules have been bent for so-called whales at the casino.

-One high roller requested a fridge of bananas so he could squeeze and throw them as he gambled.

-Another player was permitted to urinate on a wall in the casino.

-Numerous whales were allowed to throw chairs and scream at dealers.

So if you don’t want to be kicked out of a casino just make sure you are really, really rich like poker’s all-time greatest whales!

3) Well, I Won’t Back [Tom] Dwan

Sometimes poker forums devolve into an endless parade of insults and negativity. On the other hand sometimes they help generate absolute gems of poker content.

Yesterday TwoPlusTwo user veract released the funniest poker video we’ve seen in awhile. The video is by user jose luis Romero.

Basically it’s Dan “Jungleman12” Cates as Tom Petty singing a version of Won’t Back Down that swaps down with Dwan. The joke being that Dwan allegedly owes Cates a lot of money for the years-old durrrr Challenge. It’s weird. It’s funny. And it has to be watched.

So just kick back, click play and enjoy the show as you head off into the weekend:

Daily 3-Bet: Negreanu Comeback, Lads Night In, Old-School Mob

You can fire suggestions for future 3-Bet pieces in the comments section below.

In today’s Daily 3-Bet we’ll take a look at some early heroes in the WSOP National Championship, Jake Cody’s Lad’s Night In and a very old-school photo of the Hendon Mob.

1) Harwood, Negreanu Early Leaders at WSOP National Championship

What off-season?

Poker pros have been woken from their post-WSOP slumber for the 2015 WSOP National Championship in North Carolina.

Phil Hellmuth, Daniel Negreanu, Ryan Riess, Shannon Shorr, Scott Clements and Jared Jaffee were among the many pros that took part in Day 1 of the tournament yesterday.

By the end of the day the 122 initial runners had been reduced to 49 with Negreanu, Loni Harwood, Ari Engel and Dominik Nitsche in the 20 chip counts.

The WSOP National Championship, which awards a WSOP gold bracelet, is a bit of an oddball tournament with 100 players earning free seats during the 2014-15 WSOP circuit and another 100 allowed to buy in directly for $ 10,000.

Follow along via the WSOP live updates.

2) Jake Cody to Host Lads Night In for Prostate Research

The parade of charity poker tournaments this year continues with a unique event from Jake Cody, PokerStars and Prostate Cancer UK.

Cody will host a VIP Lads Night In on Sept. 25, 2015. Proceeds from the evening will go towards Prostate Cancer UK.

So how do you get in?

First, sign-up for Lads Night In on the Prostate Cancer UK page here (open only to UK residents).

Second, Tweet using the hashtag #JCLadsNightIn and describe your dream opponents at the poker table.

Cody will pick the most entertaining, creative or witty Tweet as the winner. The winner, and four friends, will then play a VIP home game hosted by Jake Cody in central London.

PokerStars and Cody are encouraging players around the UK to host their own home games and donate some of the proceeds to Prostate Cancer UK.

3) #TBT Old School Hendon Mob

Time flies.

It seems like yesterday the Hendon Mob was shaking up the poker world for the first time but they are now amongst the elder statesmen of the game.

That’s why we love this ancient newspaper clipping (written by Victoria Coren no less!) that was Tweeted by UKPokerHeroes.

“Poker is going to be massive and we’ll be massive in it,” said the original group that included Ram Vaswani, Ross Boatman, Barny Boatman and Joe Beevers.

Ah the good old days:

Playing Pocket Queens With Tony Dunst

Slightly confused what to do when you are dealt two queens in no-limit Texas Hold’em? Don’t worry, you are not alone! Although it’s the third best starting hand of the game, many poker players aren’t as confident with pocket queens as they would be with kings or aces. So, how should one play them pre-flop? partypoker Team Pro Tony Dunst recently made an article on the topic in which he explained the importance of, for example, playing them accordingly to your stack size. Usually, when we’re d[...]
